GTU Will be Closing

GlasgowTheatreUnderground has historically been run for free, with all of the costs relating to hosting and domain registrations being absorbed by Phoenix Productions, whilst most of the day-to-day editorial activities have been taken on by Bruce. Unfortunately we're no longer in a position to sustain this and so it is with a quite significant amount of sorrow that we have to announce that GlasgowTheatreUnderground will be ceasing to operate from the end of this month.

We'd like to thank all of our users who have come along with us!

Michael Hughes,
Bruce Downie

Edinburgh shows

It Came from the Edinburgh Festival!I really liked 'The Event' (Assembly), a one-man play, fully-scripted and tightly performed, fascinating about acting, and about being an audience, taking the phenomenon of theatre seriously - 'you cannot be serious', and and at the same time, getting to the heart of the matter. That's show business, all right.
Also Brian Friel's 'Faith Healer' - fully-staged linked monologues, full of 'stories', but can you believe them (trust me)?
You'd be lucky to miss 'Optimism', over-sold and over-blown - not just cos they're Aussies, either.

Female performers: see a top-notch show for free

It Came from the Edinburgh Festival! There's an ACE opportunity to see a free show on 9 and 10 August, just to ease you nicely into the month...

It's basically an invitation for female performers to come to the TRILOGY previews.
The show's had a fair bit of press, but if you've not heard about it, here's more info:
www.thearches.co.uk.

By 'performers', I think they are looking for anyone from amateur to professional - anyone with an interest in acting and theatre. There's a chance to volunteer in the show, and this is an opportunity to check it out and make up your mind. For free!

You can reserve a ticket through The Arches - call the box office on 0141 565 1000 or email jill@thearches.co.uk, and quote FRINGE WOMEN. Not sure how many tickets are left but I'd get a move on before the inevitable pre-Fringe push...

...you're welcome!

The Censor by Anthony Neilson @ The Vault Annexe 19-25th Aug

It Came from the Edinburgh Festival!UWS Productions, a dynamic new Glasgow-based theatre company, is proud to present its inaugural production of Anthony Neilson’s acclaimed play The Censor

This controversial and rarely seen play revolves
around a brief encounter between an ambitious female filmmaker and the man with the licensing scissors, while his dissatisfied wife seeks attention elsewhere.

Edinburgh Film Festival Bans Camera Phones

It Came from the Edinburgh Festival!

It appears that the Edinburgh Film Festival has decided to ban camera phones. Any movie goers who have one will have them confiscated, apparently in a move to prevent the films being pirated(!?!?!). I mean have you seen the video quality you get off a camera phone?

If anyone happens to go a film and have their phone "appropriated", please let us know your experience. Also be the first one to send us a video of the film taken with your camera phone and we'll try to sort out some sort of prize (we would need some proof it was taken at an EIFF film though).

It's Going to the Edinburgh Festival

It Came from the Edinburgh Festival!Just to let you know about a great new play at the Fringe this year - "Moriarty is Crying" is playing at the Hill Theatre at 8pm from 5th -29th August (excluding 17th).

Johnny needs to get out. He's in a dead end job and his dad is driving him insane.

Playing with the audience's expectations, Moriarty is Crying is a darkly comic tale about the change from teen to adult.

Written by Raymond Friel and Derek Boyle, the play won an inaugural Willy Russell award for new writing and is directed by David O'Neill.

It's a great play with a West Coast cast (Glasgow, Renfrew, Helensburgh) and it's well worth a trip through to the capital to catch it.

I really hope some of you can make it through (I'm in the play, you see). I'm looking forward to finding out who else is going to the Festival so I can try to catch as many shows as possible in between our own performances!

Best wishes
